An Easy, Zesty Twist on Turkey Burgers

Confession time: I have never learned to leave well enough alone. That can get me in trouble…a lot, and those of you who have the same tendency can probably relate! But sometimes, just sometimes, it can lead to very good things. Case in point? These easy Greek Turkey Burgers.

Some time ago, I stumbled across this recipe for burgers that had been hanging out in my bookmarks for quite a while. And it got me inspired. As amazing as the burgers look in Erin’s original recipe, my brain couldn’t stop imagining ways to customize the ingredients.

First, I thought about adding some oregano. And that made me realize, I wanted to top them with tzatziki! Because really, when is something not better with tzatziki? Definitely a perfect combination. With some fresh veggies and a soft sandwich bun, this was a light and satisfying meal that was incredibly easy to make.

Is Turkey Burger Healthier than Hamburger?

That depends on what you’re looking for from your burger. From a micronutrient perspective, ground turkey and ground beef stack up very similarly. From a macro perspective, beef tends to have a little more protein than turkey, but turkey has less saturated fat.

Both can be part of a healthy, balanced diet – and as always, check with your healthcare provider to address your specific dietary needs and goals.

What’s in These Greek Turkey Burgers?

Feeling hungry? Me too! Let’s take a look at the ingredients you’ll need to make these simple, flavorful burgers.

For the Turkey Burgers:

  • Ground Turkey: You can use whatever  percentage of fat and lean that you like.
  • Feta Cheese: Boost the flavor with some crumbled feta cheese. Yum!
  • Sun-Dried Tomatoes: If you use tomatoes in oil, be sure to squeeze out the excess oil with paper towels before adding them to the recipe.
  • Spinach: Chop up some baby spinach.
  • Greek Seasoning: Store-bought is fine, or you can make your own with this easy recipe for homemade Greek Seasoning.
  • Buns: Use regular hamburger buns or you could even wrap them up in some Homemade Pita Bread!

How to Make the Best Greek Turkey Burgers!

While some turkey burger recipes have complicated ingredients and instructions, this one keeps it simple. All you have to do is mix up the ingredients, make the patties, and then cook them on the grill, or on the stove – whichever’s best for you!

Combine the Ingredients. In a large bowl, combine your ground turkey, feta cheese, sun dried tomatoes, spinach, and seasonings. Mix with a big spoon or your hands, until the ingredients are just combined.

Make the Patties. Form the mixture into patties, and place them on a cookie sheet. You can cook them immediately at this point, or refrigerate for up to 24 hours.

GRILL the Turkey Burgers: Heat a grill to 400°F, and then grill burgers for 3 to 4 minutes per side, until the internal temperature reaches 165°F. You can also…

Cook them on the STOVETOP: In a large skillet over medium-high heat, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Add the turkey patties, and let them cook for about 4-5 minutes per side, until golden brown and cooked through, with an internal temperature of 165°F. Whether you grill or pan-fry, make sure to…

Rest the Turkey Burgers. Immediately after cooking, carefully wrap the hot turkey patties in foil, and let them rest for 5 minutes before serving. This will make them extra juicy.

Enjoy. Serve the turkey burgers on with your desired toppings, and dig in!

Tips for Success

What else should you know about cooking up a batch of these gorgeous Greek turkey burgers? Here are my best helpful hints for a great meal:

  • Add and Subtract: Don’t be afraid to tweak my recipe, just like I customized the original! You can add minced onion or onion powder, leave out the spinach, hide some chopped zucchini in there, swap the feta for halloumi… the possibilities are endless.
  • Handle with Care: When you mix the ingredients, it’s important not to overdo it, or the burgers will become tough. Mix just until nicely combined, and then form the patties gently.
  • Watch the Oil: If you buy the sun-dried tomatoes in the jar, make sure to squeeze out the excess oil using a paper towel, so that the burgers hold together and aren’t overwhelmed with oil or sun dried tomato flavor.
  • Extra Juicy Burgers: If you want your burgers to be extra juicy, you can add a tablespoon of butter to the center of each burger patty. It will melt into the meat as it cooks. I don’t find the need to do this with this turkey burger already being stuffed with cheese, but it’s a good turkey burger trick to have in your back pocket!

Yummy Side Dishes

To serve Greek turkey burgers, I love whipping up a simple side dish or two. Bonus points for anything crispy, crunchy, or potato-y!

  • Fries: Classic French fries are an amazing side, or try these Crispy Baked Sweet Potato Fries. So good!
  • Roasted Potatoes: Are roasted potatoes basically fancier fries? Maybe so – making this a very elegant choice for a side, right? Fancy or not, though, these Oven Roasted Potatoes are super snackable and delicious.
  • Raw Veggies: From carrot sticks to full-on crudités, you can’t beat crisp, raw veggies. Take things to the next level with this Easy Broccoli Salad with Bacon! It’s got tons of fresh, crunchy broccoli in a sweet and savory dressing, with cheese, bacon, and more.
  • Salad: Skip the bun and serve your turkey burger over a Greek Salad! I also have an amazing homemade Greek Salad Dressing to top off your salad!

Storing, Reheating, and Freezing Instructions

  • Store any leftover turkey burgers in the fridge. You can seal them into food storage bags or airtight containers. They’ll keep for 3 – 4 days.
  • Reheat your turkey burgers in a covered skillet, with a small amount of water or oil drizzled in there to help keep them moist. Heat on medium-low until warmed through.
  • Freeze leftover Greek turkey burgers for about three months. Thaw in the fridge before reheating.
