A Vacation-Worthy Cocktail for Summer!

Cinco de Mayo. Fourth of July. Poolside sipping. Weekend barbecues. The list of opportunities to enjoy this easy frozen mango margarita are endless! Hot weather always makes me want to pull out the blender and make something cold and delicious, and this year, I’m all about this mango margarita.

Made with smooth, silver tequila, Cointreau, lime, and plenty of frozen mango chunks, this drink is the ultimate refreshing break from all of your summer craziness. Even if a personal vacation isn’t on the cards for you anytime soon, when you sip this slushy cocktail, you’ll feel like you’re on a luxurious getaway. Let’s do this!

How Much Alcohol Is in a Margarita?

Most margarita recipes call for a couple of ounces of liquor, making them a fairly strong drink. My recipe includes a generous amount of frozen blended fruit, so I include an extra ounce of tequila. However, you can lower the amount to two ounces if you prefer, for a lighter version.

From top: Water, tajin, tequila, sugar, lime, Cointreau, frozen mango chunks.

Ingredients

So what will you need to make this drink? If you’re already familiar with making basic margaritas, this list will be no surprise – it’s everything you love in a margarita, plus frozen mango. Yum!

For the Frozen Mango Margarita

  • Mango: You can use store-bought frozen mango, or freeze your own fresh mango.
  • Tequila: You’ll need 2 – 3 ounces of tequila for this drink, to taste.
  • Cointreau: Grand Marnier or triple sec would also be fine.
  • Lime Juice: For tartness.
  • Simple Syrup: You can use store-bought simple syrup, agave nectar, or make your own simple syrup using the recipe and instructions below.
  • Tajin: This is optional, but it adds an amazing little kick to the drink.

For the Simple Syrup

  • Sugar and Water: Equal parts sugar and water make a basic simple syrup that you can use for any cocktail.

To Rim the Glass

  • Lime: A little lime juice around the rim of the glass is a must for margaritas.
  • Tajin: You could also rim the glass with plain salt, if you prefer.
Two mango margaritas with lime for garnish, next to a plate of tajin.

Let’s Make a Margarita!

Making your own frozen mango margarita is super easy, and if you want to, you can double the recipe to make two – or split one margarita between two smaller glasses.

Make the Simple Syrup

If you are making your own simple syrup, the process is really quick and easy. This makes about 2 ounces of simple syrup, or maybe a little more. The longer you boil it, the thicker and more concentrated it will become.

  1. Simmer the Sugar and Water. In a small saucepan, heat the sugar and water over medium heat, and stir until the sugar is completely dissolved.
  2. Cool. Take the simple syrup off of the heat, and let it cool before adding it to your margarita (you don’t want hot syrup melting the drink).

Make the Frozen Mango Margarita

Once your simple syrup is ready to go, you can make the margarita. All you really have to do is blend and serve, like this:

  1. Blend Everything Up: Combine the frozen mango, tequila, Cointreau, lime juice, and simple syrup in the pitcher of a blender. Blend until the mixture is smooth.
  2. Rim the Glass. Next, use a wedge of lime to moisten the rim of your glass, and dip the rim onto a plate with Tajin (or just salt, if you don’t want to use Tajin).
  3. Enjoy! Once you have the glass ready, pour the margarita mixture into the glass and garnish with a slice of lime. Serve right away.

Tips for Success

Pulling together this sweet, slushie margarita is so simple, you guys. You’ll want to make them all summer long! And these helpful tips for success will make this easy cocktail that much easier. Cheers!

  • Choosing a Mango: If you are freezing your own fresh mango, it’s important to pick a good, ripe one to peel, cut, and freeze. Similar to avocados and peaches, ripe mangos are a little bit firm, but have some give when squeezed. Avoid mushy mangos, as well as mangos that are hard.
  • Adjust the Sweetness: Just as you can dial back the tequila for a lighter, less boozy margarita, you can dial up the simple syrup to make things sweeter.
  • Which Tequila Is Best for Margaritas? This is a matter of taste, of course – but most people agree that tequila blanco (also known as silver or white tequila) is the smoothest, tastiest choice for margs.
  • Thicken, to Taste: If you would like your frozen margarita to be thicker, add some ice to the blender and blend it up a bit more.

Appetizers to Serve with a Frozen Mango Margarita

To serve, there’s nothing better than a great Mexican or Caribbean appetizer or two. Bonus points for anything crispy, like these crispy air-fryer favorites:

  • Taquitos: Crispy, crunchy, and filled with a mouthwatering chicken filling, air fryer chicken taquitos are easy to make, and go perfectly with frozen mango margaritas.
  • Shrimp: Shrimp are such a treat, any way you make them – but this simple recipe for air fryer coconut shrimp is extra-special, with its light coating of sweet coconut, crunchy panko, and parsley. Try it, and I’m sure you’ll agree!
  • Wings: Mmm, hot honey butter chicken wings in the air fryer. Anything with honey butter is a “yes” in my book, but especially sticky, savory chicken wings.
  • Tostones: Crispy fried tostones (Fried Plantains) are a great salty, carb-y snack or appetizer that would be perfect with this margarita!
  • Chips + Dip: A classic, but always good with a cocktail! Some tomatillo avocado salsa would be great, or you can go classic with homemade pico de gallo or guacamole!

What Can I Do with Leftover Margaritas?

Leftover cocktails can actually be saved for later very successfully. If you’re saving a frozen  margarita like this, just pour it into a freezer bag or a shallow freezer container. Store it in the freezer – it will keep almost indefinitely, and certainly for a few months.

To serve, take the frozen margarita out of the freezer, and crush it lightly in a blender or even with a spoon. Serve as you normally would, and enjoy!
