Let’s head back to elementary school shall we?

Red + Green = …..gross brown

I have been terrified of the infamous “Green Monster” (i.e. a green colored smoothie made with spinach) for over a year. Spinach DOES NOT belong in smoothies! I read many a blog claiming you couldn’t taste the spinach. That instead of adding flavor, it just added a vibrant green color and lots of good vitamins, minerals, fiber and protein to your smoothie.

Of course I didn’t believe it. How would you not taste the spinach? Popeye didn’t look to thrilled when he had to gulp down that can of spinach and I sure as heck am not going to be the one choking it back through a straw.

But then I got on the scale the other day, and all of the baking I am doing for a big project has caught up with me. I can’t stop the baking (due dates suck), but I can make sure what I am eating the rest of the day is ass friendly. So I decided to bite the bullet and try these scary spinach smoothies.

Ummm…so you totally can’t taste the spinach. Seriously. I couldn’t freakin’ believe it!

While many people can make gorgeously green vibrant smoothies (see here or here), apparently I can’t. I now realize why all the “Green” smoothies are made with white or yellow fruits like bananas, pineapple, green grapes and some citruses. Because RED and GREEN make BROWN. I added raspberries, strawberries and 3 oz of baby spinach to my smoothie this morning.Β Instead of green, I got brown sludge…but at least they weren’t lying, I really couldn’t taste the spinach!

I solemnly swear to always add a few big handfuls of spinach to my smoothies, even if it makes them ugly, from this point on. Pinky swear.Β 


Wannabe Green Smoothie

Recipe Note: Feel free to switch up what fruit is frozen and what fruit is fresh. But make sure to keep some of the fruit frozen to ensure that icy smoothie texture!


1/2 cup fat free plain greek yogurt
1 cup frozen pineapple
1/2 cup frozen raspberries
1 (fresh or frozen) banana
4 large fresh strawberries
3 oz (appx 2 large handfuls) fresh baby spinach


Puree all ingredients in a blender until smooth. Pour into a giant glass and serve immediately.
