Jorge likes to joke that I am a “Southern Hemisphere Drinker”. I love Rum and Tequila, but I tolerate vodka, gin and scotch/bourbon. Sometimes vodka is ok, but you would never see me ordering a Grey Goose Martini. I would need a bucketload of olives (blue cheese stuffed, please!) to choke it down.

But Rum? Well, I could write a love song about Rum. Mojitos are one of my favorite drinks and I love adding different flavors with juices or fresh fruit. Last weekend when I was in Georgia for a wedding, this adorable little bartender — who was rocking a yellow polka dot bowtie — started mixing up Pomegranate Mojitos.

Before I could even finish the first one, he would have another one in my hand. It was glorious. I asked him why his tasted so amazing and he told me that he likes to use real sugar instead of simple syrup and fresh pomegranate juice. So with all those blueberries we picked, I figured I could recreate that same amazing flavor in my own kitchen.

I used my favorite Bacardi Superior Rum to make these, but you could use any clear rum you prefer. Personally I love Bacardi for the taste and price, but also because I have gotten the chance to visit the factory in Puerto Rico more than once.

The first time I made these, my blueberries turned the drink purple. This time, they are so much more blue. It doesn’t matter what color it comes out – it all tastes the same! Cheers! 🙂

Notes: If you have an issue with fruit skins (though it should be very minimal from the spin in the food processor) just strain your puréed blueberries through a sieve. Also, as I stated above the color can vary. If you want an electric blue drink, you can always add a drop of blue food coloring.

This Blueberry Mojito is a cocktail recipe you don't want to pass up. Just look at that beautiful, vibrant color from the fresh blueberries!

  • 1 cup fresh blueberries, plus extra for garnish
  • 4 oz clear rum
  • 10 fresh mint leaves
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • juice of 2 limes
  • 6 oz club soda
  • ice


  1. In a food processor or blender, puree blueberries until smooth. Set aside.
  2. Add mint leaves and sugar to a cocktail shaker. Use a muddler (or the end of a wooden spoon) to muddle the mint and sugar. Add the lime juice, rum and pureed blueberries: shake vigorously.
  3. Pour ice and club soda into two tall glasses and then pour in rum mixture. Gently stir. Garnish with a lime wedge, extra blueberries and a sprig of mint. Serve immediately.


Recipe Note: If you do not feel like pureeing your blueberries, just add them to the shaker and smash them with your muddler. It’s faster, just not as pretty of an end result.

    Did you mix blue kool-aid for the picture? I just made the drink with pureed blueberries, and it looked nothing like the drink in your picture.

      Ha! Nope, no Kool-Aid. Like I said above the recipe, you can add a drop of blue food coloring for a more potent blue color!

    these are really pretty and sound good. I am confused about the simple syrup, though. Don’t you use real sugar to make simple syrup? I am from GA, too

      Yep you do use sugar to make simple syrup! However, what he was saying is that instead of using simple syrup (where you melt the sugar into a syrup) – he uses regular granulated sugar in his!

    If you want an even smoother, fab rum try Koloa Kaua’i Dark Rum … absolutely DELISH!!! Like you, I LOVE rum, specifically Bacardi dark is my fav but the Koloa dark is by far my favorite EVER!     Made this today for the kickoff of my vacation. My blueberries were not very juicy, so I doubled them. We have had very poor berries so far up here in Canada.

    But I really loved the taste! So fresh and festive!

    The comment about the club soda is very true! Mix ingredients before adding the soda. Also, the drink doesn’t look anything like the picture. The pureed berries sink to the bottom & looks gross. The taste wasn’t bad, but next time I will use less lime.
